The Match: Champions for Charity is set for Sunday, May 24 at 3 p.m. ET.
Thomas will be an on-course reporter, as will CBS’ Amanda Balionis. Brian Anderson is the host and he will be joined by two analysts: NBA legend Charles Barkley and 2008 Masters champ Trevor Immelman. Barkley also works as a basketball analyst on TNT’s Inside the NBA.
All the action will be live on four different cable channels: TNT, TBS, truTV and HLN. There will also be a live pre-match show on the Bleacher Report app starting at 2 p.m.
The event will raise $10 million for COVID-19 relief.
The Match: Champions for Charity will be played at the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida.Back when Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson held The Match a few years back, we all figured that was the peak of friendly golf competitions. Well, thanks to the coronavirus, we’ve got a hell of an event in store. Tiger Woods will team up with former NFL QB Peyton Manning while Phil Mickelson will join forces with current Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady for The Match: Champions for Charity. The trash talking has already begun — to no one’s surprise — with Peyton and Brady already boasting a pretty healthy rivalry from Colts-Patriots.
The event will take place over Memorial Day Weekend on May 24 and will begin airing at 3 p.m. ET on TNT and TBS. The 18-hole match will consist of nine holes of best ball and nine holes of modified alternate shot. We all remember Mickelson beat Woods in The Match in Las Vegas in 2018. Let’s take a look at the odds on DraftKings Sportsbook for The Match: Champions for Charity. The four golfers will donate $10 million toward COVID-19 coronavirus relief efforts, benefitting organizations such as the American Red Cross, Direct Relief, Save Small Business and the ALL IN Challenge. Viewers will also be able to make donations during the telecast, and to bid on raffles including golf experiences with Woods and Mickelson.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unimaginable tragedy and heartbreak,” said WarnerMedia News and Sports chairman Jeff Zucker. “We’re hopeful this event and platform will help raise meaningful funding for COVID-19 relief, while also providing a source of brief distraction and entertainment for all sports fans.”
Woods will team with Manning, while Mickelson will partner-up with Brady in a Team Match Play event. The format will be Four-Ball (Best Ball) on the front nine and Modified Alternate Shot on the back nine, with additional “on-course challenges” to raise further charitable funds.
Woods and Mickelson previously squared off in a winner-take-all, pay-per-view match in Las Vegas in November 2018. Mickelson took home $9 million after besting Woods on the 22nd hole. The Match I took place in November of 2018, which led to Phil Mickelson besting Tiger Woods after four playoff holes at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Almost two years later, the competition has been revived, but with a slight twist. Enter Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.
Although the PGA Tour’s scheduled start is still about a month away, we will get some live golf on May 24 as Woods and Mickelson get back at it, though now paired up with two NFL legends as part of the COVID-19 charity event which will broadcast live on TNT. Let’s dive in.
DATE AND VENUE:
Sunday, May 24. Coverage begins at 2 p.m. ET from Medalist Golf Club in Florida.
Tiger Woods/Peyton Manning vs. Phil Mickelson/Tom Brady
BetMGM have Woods/Manning as -200 favorites with Mickelson/Brady as +150 underdogs. Caesars Entertainment released Woods/Manning at -175 and Mickelson/Brady at +155.
THE RULE SET:
The match will kick off with nine holes of four-ball, a.k.a. best ball, with the back nine being modified alternate shot play. Each player will tee off and then play alternate shots after drive selection. To make things even more interesting, added on-course challenges will be found throughout the round to raise additional donations for the cause. Each player will also have an open mic, so expect some trash talk along the way.
COMPARING THE PROS:
Woods, the defending Masters champion, currently sits 16th in world rankings, while Mickelson missed the cut in four of his last six events, dropping him to 222nd. Although Mickelson successfully defeated Woods in their first event, it’s important to note that this event will be played at what is considered Woods’ home course, one at which he holds the course record at 62.
COMPARING THE QUARTERBACKS:
Diving into handicaps, the players have very similar skill sets, with Manning having the edge with a 6 handicap in comparison to Brady’s 8. Manning has probably been more active with his golf game, while Brady continues to prep for his 21st season in the NFL, his first with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Manning has also played with Woods before in the 2005 Bay Hill Pro-Am and 2009 Quail Hollow Championship.
Although Mickelson came through and cashed tickets as the +130 underdog in the first matchup, I am siding with the favorite this go around. Woods’ home course, Manning/Woods’ play history and Manning’s slight handicap edge over Brady has me liking that -175 line. I will go with Woods and his teammate leaving the charity event victorious. Let’s even the Woods/Mickelson score at one a piece, setting up a rubber match down the road.
